Ohio's One-Mile Fitness Walk

Medina County’s Wellness Committee, in conjunction with National Employee Health and Fitness Week and Healthy
Ohio, challenges
YOU to "Walk the Talk!"
Mark your calendars! Walk a mile in Ohio’s sixth statewide “Healthy Ohio Fitness Walk” scheduled for May 19, 2010 between the hours of noon and 2 p.m. All Medina County employees are invited to participate to collectively walk with other Ohioans a hundred thousand miles this day.
If these times are not convenient, or if you work an afternoon or evening shift, you won't be left out. Pick a time and location that's convenient for you: around your community park, on a school playground, an athletic field or track, through your neighborhood, in a parking lot or shopping mall, up and down stairways, on your treadmill, outside the building you work in...anywhere!
Merely sign up with one of the Wellness Committee members and after you've completed your walk, report the distance you walked back to that member.

ultimate goal is to promote physical activity and educate all Ohioans
about the importance of regular physical activity in improving overall
health and wellness. There are alarming statistics concerning sedentary
lifestyles and obesity, not only in
Ohio, but nationwide. Walking is the one exercise that is
completely aerobic. It helps to condition the heart, large muscle groups
and relieve stress.
It will take a collective effort to motivate one hundred thousand Ohioans to walk one mile on this day. Every department and agency is encouraged to participate.
Let's get moving...Active bodies are healthier, happier and lighter, so join in the fun!
If a daily fitness walk could be put in a pill, it would be one of the most popular prescriptions in the world. It has so many health benefits. Walking can reduce the risk of many diseases — from heart attack and stroke to hip fracture and glaucoma. These may sound like claims on a bottle of snake oil, but they're backed by major research. Walking requires no prescription, the risk of side effects is very low, and the benefits are numerous:
Managing your weight.
Controlling your blood pressure.
Decreasing your risk of heart attack.
Boosting "good" cholesterol
Lowering your risk of stroke.
Reducing your risk of breast cancer and type 2 diabetes.
Avoiding your need for gallstone surgery.
Protecting against hip fracture.
Prevent depression, colon cancer, constipation, osteoporosis, and impotence
Lengthen lifespan
Lower stress levels
Relieve arthritis and back pain
Strengthen muscles, bones, and joints
Improve sleep
Elevate overall mood and sense of well-being.
